Is Lateral Entry to Government Services Right- Libertarian
Perspective
Pretending to others that your opponents are stupid may sometimes be a sensible tactic. Believing that they are is usually a serious mistake- David D Friedman.
Recently the UPSC or the Union Public Service Commission has advertised seeking application for lateral entry to the Senior Bureaucratic posts at the centre. This stint has grabbed a lot of eyeballs questioning the importance of merit and reservation in the country to secure a job at such prestigious position. How would libertarians react to such an event?
Lateral Entry Meaning
Lateral entry typically refers to the process of appointing the individuals directly from outside the government to mid-senior level positions.
Libertarian Vision
In the ideal libertarian world, merit would hold no credit, as in such a world, there will be no requirement to hire or promote meritorious individuals. In a Libertarian world, there is no government intervention to regulate the functioning of an individual. When looking at the perspective of lateral entry into the Civil services, Libertarians would hold less importance as they believe that for a society to establish free government, order is required. However, conversely, lateral entry to civil services would bring a much better perspective and will help in leading the government from a set of fresh and experienced eyes.
In the current scenario, the government has criticized this stint by the UPSC solely because of upholding the caste-based politics that goes with a reservation system, which in turn promotes religion.
Conclusion
But when considered from a libertarian perspective, lateral entry would mean much less, especially when we look at the current Government scenario.
