What Does A Libertarian Think of A Social Safety Net?
It is important to have a social security net to foster social solidarity and social welfare.
Here's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. - Ayn Rand
Social Safety is important provided that we live in a society where individuals are as helpless as one can be to combat poverty and hunger. Although we live in a society, it is operated by the state, so what is the point of having a society where the individuals cannot act according to their own will to combat the social issues rather have to live on the mercy of state to demolish these social issues.
Why Libertarians Think that Social Security Net is Important?
Libertarians have criticised the functioning of society where the individuals act in a cold and compassionless manner that drives them towards the edge of greed. This compromises social security. Libertarians believe that with the power and potential of social security there can be a safe society.
India’s poverty percent is 11.6% in rural and 6.3% urban area respectively. Has poverty reduced with the state interference. However, with social solidarity there can be collective effort to reduce these social issues. But has state intervention led to any good?
With a developed social security, there can heightened responsibility of the citizens to adequately contribute towards a safe and sound environment where the word ‘Welfare’ adequately fits in and no greed or injustice can creep into the crevices of society, which will continue to evolve.
Conclusion
The social security net fosters social solidarity. Libertarians emphasize the power of social solidarity to provide for a safe society where every individual is following positive liberty and uplifts the society for good.
