Why Libertarianism Struggles to Take Root in India?

“Our society cannot be a wholesome one without dispensation of justice”- David Milton

Libertarian thought has been long cripples in India, leading to restricted living, questioning the importance of Freedom of Speech and Expression.

Libertarian beliefs are not only in the essence of freedom but also look at any difficulty from unbiased eyes. But why is libertarianism struggling in India?

Not from A Critical Lens

Although there are varied opinions about ideologies of Capitalism and Socialism, it cannot be denied that Capitalism has brought prosperity to India. It is now the dominant mode of production with the Government Intervention.

It is seen that in most of the developed countries of the world, classical liberalism, along with similar ideas, has become popular. However, in India, even after the failed economic policies of the late 90s, the liberal mindset has failed to make a mark in India. But why?

Lack of Classical Liberal Representation

One of the main reasons why India lacks a liberal thought process in its operating system is because there is a long time of resentment against the liberals. The Swatantra party of Rajgopalchari is dead, and although the CPI has declined, the leftist parties have moved to the center-left. These ideas are still very popular amongst the population owing to the different pros and cons each ideal holds. But to give these ideas a steady and loud voice, it is important for the population to be bold in embracing the libertarian though process. But in contrast, public dissatisfaction with liberal values is plummeting in India, leading to a widespread dislike towards Liberalism.

Conclusion

To make this rigid mindset liberal and free, it is important for the population to acknowledge the growth that liberal mindset has made in India. Only then, liberalism can find as well as roots in India.
